Department Profile

The study programme in Biotechnologies is an integral part of the field of study 5.2.25 Biotechnologies. It presents the principles of the behaviour of biological systems under the influence of exogenic and endogenic factors. The curriculum is based on knowledge applicable in the management of biotechnological processes under particular conditions of production in chemical and food industries, environmental technologies, and agriculture. The knowledge of informatics enables the students to increase their professional competencies and access the world databases covering the area of biotechnology.

The study programme aims to prepare the graduates who are able, in current conditions of rapid scientific and technological developments, to exploit biosystems and GMOs in problem solving in different branches of the national economy, as well as in biologisation and ecologisation of technologies.

The core knowledge areas of the bachelor programme in Biotechnologies include:

·        Fundamentals of chemistry
·        Fundamentals of biology
·        Biochemistry
·        Microbiology genetics
·        Molecular biology
·        Biotechnologies

Additional core knowledge areas of the study programme include:

·      Laboratory methods and techniques in biotechnological processes
·      Environmental technologies
·      Fundamentals of informatics
·      Biotechnological processes and facilities

The study programme in Applied Biology is an integral part of the field of study 4.2.1 Biology. Besides classical biological subjects, it offers instruction in modern biological disciplines such as molecular biology, genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, biomolecular design and other subject areas, along with ecological and environmental disciplines and subjects involving the issues of sustainable development. The Applied Biology programme is designed to provide bachelor’s degreestudents with the relevant knowledge of fundamental natural sciences, especially biology, and the related disciplines.
Biology graduates can be employed in a wide range of places with biological and chemical focus, working in research teams or individually in the area of research and technologies. They are well prepared to fulfil the requirements of specialised institutions where field work is demanded, mainly in the environmentally and ecologically oriented working places. The graduates are also qualified to work in state government and self-government institutions, as well as in private sector companies aimed at research and technologies. They are capable of making independent decisions when solving problems and suggesting measures. They are also able to participate in designing projects and successfully implement them in practice.
